Abstract

This study brings up the discussion of proper names of a portion of the population of African descent in Brazil. The text tries to show by relating the story of Bahia and Brazil, why the proper names of Africans have practically died out in the country, revealing possible factors that led blacks to adopt names of European origin. For this, use is made of the book of registration of the Society for the Protection of the Downtrodden (SPD), a black brotherhood of Salvador that has existed since 1832, when there was still the slave regime in Brazil. We analyze here the names in the book from the second decade of the twentieth century. From the reading of texts that deal with proper names in Brazil and Portugal, as well as texts that trace the history of Brazilian slavery and of the SPD, as well as analysis of the names in the book of registration, confirms the hypothesis of the use of names of European origin by black Brazilians and seeks to create hypotheses for the explanation of this fact.
